MENDOCINO, Calif. - Mendocino County authorities were investigating Monday the possibility that a headless body that washed up last week near Point Saint George is that of a San Francisco surgeon who went missing late last year while diving for abalone.

Dr. William Krupski was diving offshore near Van Damme State Park with his wife Nov. 27 when they became separated and he disappeared.

On Jan. 11, an unidentified body was found, wearing the same brand and size wet suit, and the same style swim trunks, as Krupski was wearing when he was last seen.

"There is a strong possibility that this is the person," Del Norte County Sheriff's Commander Tim Athey said on Wednesday. "In my gut, it's 90 percent yes."

Krupski was a renowned surgeon at Kaiser-Permanente Medical Center, known for his pioneering work in abdominal aortic aneurysms and arterial disease.
