I find the UCSD model is not that good. I like the Navy model much better, especially for predictions>

Southern California Model

Catalina Channel Model

North Pacific Model

note that the times indicated on the charts are GMT, thus 8 hours later than here. Usually the 2nd chart in the series is approximatley now and they are spaced every 12 hours.
Closely spaced bands on the chart indicates a steep gradient and usually indicates a shorter period.

The Southern California Buoy Map is also a good source since it gives you wave periods as well as heights.
