The original report stated that he spent 10-20 minutes alone underwater trying to equalize. He saw bubbles and followed them, then gave up and surfaced. He lost sight of the rigs underwater and surfaced 400 feet down current, but could still see the boat. Rather than swimming toward the boat, he thought the boat would come for him when they discovered him missing. Those protocals aren't taught by anyone, even PADI.
