What would I do if I were the Grifter? Take responsibility for my own actions, i.e., abort the dive and resurface if my buddy(ies) disappeard, and fin back to the boat. But then I don't dive with a buddy, I dive solo. If I had a clearing problem I'd resurface and return to the boat, not take 10 or 15 minutes trying to equalize and drift away from the platform.
