Even if your not DIR, getting a tow-behind scooter is Key. Mako, X-Scooter, or Gavin-type scooters are the only options. You will like the X-scooter the best due to performance, size and weigth, but they cost $3K+ (as do Gavins).
Unless you are doing technical diving, your best chose is an Oceanic Mako. You can buy them used for $800 - $1,300 and they are simple, nearly indestructable, rated to 185'. The Mako is even the scooter of choice (for open water diving) by the guy that makes Gavins.
