Control. I can control my buoyancy and keep it close to neutral throughout an ascent if I'm horizontal. When vertical, my legs tend to pull me down. In the unlikely event of an out of control ascent/descent being horizontal can slow you down by creating an larger area of resistance. The only problem I have with being horizontal is that you can't see a sea lion coming in for an attack. :-) My elbow is still sore.
