Dive light with rechargeable batteries

I currently use regular alkaline batteries in my UK Light Cannon now. Although it works great, I hate throwing money away on batteries.
Did anyone notice a significant dicrease in brightness when using rechargeables (NiMH) since we are talking about 12V vs 9.6V (8 X 1.5 vs 8 X 1.2 V).
Is there a different bulb you can put in designed for a lower voltage?
