Sometimes CDNN can be a little like the National Enquirer, but I saw this story on CNN as well. There are other intake pipes in the area that have grates. The company spokesman said that signs would be covered by growth in no time, so they wouldn't help. Grates would have helped, as would knowing the area you're diving.
