unidentied large red crab

this big red crab was in about 20-30ft of water near parsons landing in catalina, deep in a small cave/crevice. He was pretty big, larger than any crab I've seen except for large sheep crabs. width of the body and legs combined was between 14 and 24 inches. never seen anything like it. no luck with divebums or the pacific coast crab & shrimp book. anyone know what it is? he kept waving his huge claw at me.
