Jim, fyi it can't be rock crab, the carapace shape is completely different. Greg Jensen (author of pacific coast crabs and shrimps) id'ed it as a southern kelp crab.

However, his book lists the carapace length as up to 3.6 inches, this guy looked 2-3 times that size, he was massive. Maybe it was just the shallow-water narcosis working on me.
