Mike,
For a family trip - Catalina. Conditions have been pretty good and the dive park is interesting and easy with pleanty of stuff for non-divers too. For a straight dive trip, consider a junt up north to the Channel Islands. The Peace out of Venture gives good diving. Truth Aquatics in Santa Barbara are solid too.
