In this instance I'm not sure that there is anything that even the most responsible diver can do. If you surface anywhere but directly next to the boat you are in jeopardy. How many divers do you know that can do that on a consistant basis? Not many, especially new ones. I'm pretty good at it but I even screw up sometimes and have to make a swim for it.
