Mohawk reef is a fantastic beach dive. I like the Mesa Lane access best (even with the stairs). Waves tend to be ankle slappers and vis is usually great. Aroyo Burro is another access point, though the reef is a bit of a swim (the showers at AB make up for this inconvenience). You'll also find good diving at the state beaches to the North (get Sheckler's book). Plus you're just a short drive from Ventura's dive boats (and those of Truth Aquatics in SB). I'm not a big Truth fan based on several past mediocre trips (crew attitude, inexperienced captains), but they do have nice boats and maybe you'll find better experiences.
