What are captions?

Picasa creates captions the way journalists do – using the IPTC standard. That means your captions are saved within their pictures and stay with them, even when you export them, send them by email, or send them to friends using Hello. Picasa captions are fully editable and searchable, and you choose whether to display them or not.

"To create a caption for a photo, double click on the photo you wish to add a caption to. Click your cursor on the heading underneath the picture titled, Make a caption. Type your caption in the space provided.

To delete a caption, click the trash can icon to the right of the caption text.

Captions will only be displayed in Picasa and other IPTC compatible programs. Your captions will not be displayed when you print or email your pictures, run the auto-slideshow, or on the Gift CD Slideshow."

So I guess I have to buy an editing program that will allow me to add text. Any el cheapo suggestions ;-)?
