Good advice - diving from ocean beaches requires training you probably don't have.

The following link goes to a low-cost way to learn how to judge conditions and make safe entries and exits (the $5 cost includes lunch). Its conducted in LA County, but is certainly well worth the drive up from San Diego. Its held at various beaches because each type of beach has its own characteristics, so you should go to the one(s) most typical of the site(s) you desire to dive.
