I had major surgery on a joint once. I was "no weight bearing" for three months. I was just about a fruit cake. The surgeon said I could walk in a pool if I was up to my neck in water. I probably walked 100 miles in the pool during that time. (That is what they do to injured horses).

As soon as I was off crutches, I took off on a three week dive trip (with the Dr's permission) It was contriversioal because of the possibility of developing avascular necrosis in the joint but it worked well for me and that was how I got my strength back.

If you get a Dr.'s note there are people who will help you in and out of the water :).
