There was a man who was attacked and killed wearing one. There was some question as to whether he may have turned it off. The instructions say to activate it as soon as you enter the water and deactivate just before you exit.

True, if a shark is hungry and aggressive, the device may not deter it. But it is commonly used by spearfishermen in other parts of the country to make sure they get their catch to the boat, and it it effective.

I am asking because I do not want to put other divers off by wearing a piece of equipment. I have already made up my mind about whether I think it is a good idea for me, but diving is not a solitary experience.
