A spearfisher on scuba who is fishing for his own family's dinner is better for the marine environment than the same dinner fished commercially. This is due to commercial fisheries bycatch, ocean bottom degradation, processing, pollution impacts due to transportation, etc.

Spearfishing while freediving is more a sportsman's endeavor than it is on scuba BUT not all spearfishers are fishing for sport. Many are fishing for dinner. Why make it more difficult to be eco-friendly?
