Never been to the Keys, but I vote for Kona.

I had a good week there -- stayed a cheap motel and dived as much as possible. Lots of easy beach diving and boat diving. Didn't have much time to check out the night life (above water) but it's there if you want it.

Not much coral diversity but lots of interesting marine life including some larger stuff like sharks, mantas, turtles, spinner dolphins etc. and you might get lucky and see a whale shark or something really special.

The manta night dive is a bit of a circus but it's well worth it -- in 30 feet of water, it's fine even for newer divers.

All that plus volcanoes (also great to see at night) and really great coffee.

It's still not California though ;-)
