Monterey has some great diving and I've been on several boats that will take you to Monterey bay areas that are also accessible from shore. Many times I've been on a boat where the travel time to the dive site was amazingly short.

If you are diving in Monterey bay then it is almost a toss up -> cash versus convenience.
The $75-$85 you pay for 2 boat dives provide a more convenient entrance and exit from the dive site and you won't get sandy when exiting but you may be diving the exact same area you could from shore.

The boats will never commit to going around the Peninsula because the conditions/weather are the deciding factor,
BUT if you can find this opportunity then there is no decision, it is far better and well worth the price paid.
I really enjoy the Carmel Pinnacles and the calrity can be superior.
