Unconscious diver rescued from ocean at the Coronado Islands

An unconscious 70-year-old man was plucked from the water today after a diving accident near the Coronado Islands, a U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant said.

The accident occurred in the victim's second dive of the day from the commercial diving boat "Ocean Express," said USCG Lt. Rick Hipes.

The Coast Guard was notified around 2 p.m. that the diver had been found unconscious, Hipes said. The man was responsive when a rescue helicopter reached the scene abou.625 a half-hour later, he said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was flown to UCSD Medical Center and placed in a hyperbaric chamber, the lieutenant said.
