A friend's private vessel would be your best option for transporting it. It would be illegal to take the engine on board the passenger vessels per PUC regulations. You could also ship it via Catalina Freight Lines (foot of Avalon Blvd. in Wilmington).

In the 1970's a number of my high school students would kayak across the San Pedro Channel to the mainland after bedcheck to see their girlfriends, then catch a seaplane back in time for morning roll call. So, you could make it in the boat... but then, you might not!
