I was going to suggest that these were the larger spiny ones rather than the smaller smooth shelled sand crabs that we find in the intertidal and subtidal. I think someone beat me to it.

There has been some interesting work on the sand crabs of the Channel Islands and adjacent mainland by Dr. Jenny Dugan at UCSB.
