I encased the tails in solid blocks of ice, but in freezer bags. Even though I had carefully clipped off the bigger spines on the underside of the tails, there are a lot of fine spines on the fringes of the tail near the end that sometimes poke pinholes in the plastic bags. Until the water completely froze in the bags I had a lot of stalactites and stalacmites growing in my freezer. Your idea of using disposable plastic containers solves this problem completely - thanks for the posting!
