I am a newbie to the bug hunting. I though I was getting better to catch them in the last few weeks, but when I was out for a day dive today, I realized that I still have a difficult time in catching them. (i.e., I saw 6 legal and caught none. I thought they were spooky.)

My question, if anyone can help me, is:

Should I reach out to the bug by slowly extending the hand first so that my hand is close to the bug and then quickly swat?

Or, should I swat the bug by extending the hand in one quick motion?

Or, perhaps, I am missing something else...
