Put both your hands out long before you approach the hole and swim them into the whole and scoop the bug toward you as you grab it.
A quick motion will be picked up by the bug long before your hand gets there because a pressure wave travels ahead of your hand as it changes velocity.
If possible grab for the body and grab like you mean to kill (because you do!). and do not let go.
