I like to use the UK mini-Q40 strap-on light. I wear it all the time. For night time bug hunting (which I do solo) I keep it on and it allows me to drop the big light as I make the grab and still see what I'm doing. During the I leave it off, but use it when I have to drop my backpack to crawl into holes after bugs.
I always use a side breathing regulator (like a Poseidon or Oceanic Omega) which only exhausts only on the left side, so I keep the light on the right. I have heard people who use more conventional regulators complain that the light reflects off the bubbles and bothers them.
If you are night diving from a boat it is a good idea to turn it off surface so the DM does not mistake as a distress signal.
