If there is a northwest swell of any large size, forget this cove as it concentrates the force of the swell into the center of the cove with a steep shore break. Go over to La Jolla Shores instead.

Otherwise its a great gateway to a nice rocky area in the sanctuary - lots of ledges to explore once you exit the cove. On a calmer day, the vis can be fantastic.

Parking is free and on the street - get there early to find a place (you can drop your gear off on the grassy area above the lifeguard station near the restroom - leave your buddy to watch it - then find a parking spot). The lifeguard will generally tell you if its OK to dive or not and they post conditions on a chalkboard there.
