BIG KNIFE!

Just kidding. Basically anything in the ocean larger than about 30 lbs can own you if it wants to. We all suck in the water compared to things that live there.

There have been a handful of seal/sea lion attacks over the last year. Through anecdotal evidence, most have been attributed to domoic acid poisoning from "red tide". Most are just a quick nip and then the creature leaves.

Consider yourself lucky to have had such an intimate encounter with the seal. They play with each other like this so you should feel honored that he considered you "one of his own".

On the other hand, if you're ever being attacked by a seal or sea lion, about the only option you have is to leave the area and drop any game that you may have in an effort to distract it.

I've never heard of a diver in SoCal being killed by one of these so you'll probably be OK :-)

Cheers,
Ross-O
