I think they get crabby because of the general stupidity of Joe Public. I've done some part time work at a shop and I have seen some real yoyo's come through there. It's hard to sell someone on Scuba, they have to want to do it and be willing to spend money. Most of the people coming through the door do not have the right additude about the sport. Some people just want to come in a pick your brain and waste your time and not spend a dime. Sometimes they are just there to compare prices or see what's new with no pressure. It's hard to know. My guess is that you can a crabby salesman at any scuba shop at one time or another. Someone mentioned a dive shop (below) they like but I've had a bad experience with. On another day it might be just fine.
