Way out of my field, but an immediate question that occurs to me is to ask what the neuron density is in the optic nerve. This should be the rate limiting step in transmission of resolution. More rods/cones should increase sensitivity of detection, but wouldn't you be limited by the "bandwith" of the optic nerve with respect to the resolution? Another way to look at it is paralell vs serial hookup of the rods/cones to the neurons. I have no idea which it is though perhaps someone does. Ross?
