Boat diving would probably be you're best bet. Beach diving is great as well, but if this is your first trip to LA, finding a marina is probably easier than finding a pacticualr dive spot.

There are a number of boats that will take you to Catalina island for the day. This is usally a 3 dive day, although some boats will schedule 4 dives.

What type of diving have you done? How many dives have you made? When was the last time you dove? If you're from Florida or dive warm waters, the Pacific may be a little colder that what you're used to. Give the boat company this info and they can better address your needs.

The boats I tend to ride are the Pacific Star and the Great Escape. I can't speak about other boats in LA, but I'm sure there are others that post here who can.
