I've seen them rub against algae on the bottom and even kelp, which might accomplish the same thing. Here on Catalina, the primary cleaner fish seem to be the younger sheephead although senoritas will also clean them (but I doubt they take the large "ectoparasites"). Off Anacapa Kathy deWet-Oleson reports island kelpfish are the primary cleaners (perhaps due to the relative absence of sheephead there?). |
