Helicopters were used sparingly in areas of very rugged terrain due to limited human access. Their use was also very limited due to expense. In 1971 I met with representatives from the Nature Conservancy's Washington DC office. Their suggestion for the elimination of the goats was to bring the Marines over from Camp Pendleton and have them use Vietnam era helicopter gunships to eradicate the goats. That was NOT something I approved of for a number of reasons and suggestions like that led, in part, to the formation of Catalina's own independent Conservancy. |
