If you will be here near any of the holidays - book now. The boats do fill up in the Summer - if you book 6 weeks ahead of time non holiday, you should be OK. Summer is very popular with new divers. I've had to stay home many a weekend when I didn't book in advance. Most of the rest of the year, 3 weeks in advance should do it. "Rules" change depending on what group is chartering the boat. Some groups have equipment specification requirements - amount of lift in your bc, etc., with other boats/groups - anything goes. Be sure to ask about particulars ahead of time so you don't get a last minute surprise. If you want guided underwater trips, ask around. You will be very independent on most So. Cal. dive trips.
