It depends on your expectations and what you want out of a camera. If you want to push yourself to take art-level pictures, and don't mind messing with a larger rig, multiple lenses, etc, then yes, wait to get a dSLR together. On the other hand you can take pretty excellent photos with the upper-end point-and-shoot cameras.

Most of my photog friends have gravitated in the past toward the Olympus line (5050 etc), and more recently Fuji (right now the E900 has a following). But people seem surprised by the quality possible with the Sea & Sea DX8000 ... see this review:
