Camera batteries stored for a year

Is there something I should no to make sure I get full life from my aa nimh bateries that have been stored in a camera and housing for 10 months? I know they need to be charged. But, is there anything else I need to do? My BF said that I will have to condition the batteries before I take them down in the camera or else I might only get a few shots before I need to recharge them. Does this sound correct or am I worried about nothing?
