Depending on which version of the story you read, they either

1) fought the shark off with a spear gun
2) fought the shark off with a "shark prod" whatever that is
3) gathered around a buddy wearing a shark pod and the shark went away

The third version above is what I read first. I am guessing that a copy editor assumed that there must have been a misspelling of the word "prod" and "corrected" it to pod.

Shark pods are popular down under.
