Good post follow-up. Learning how to ditch a weight belt is the easy part...how do they teach when to ditch, when to not ditch, or what to do if accidentally ditching a belt? That's the REAL skills to learn. Methinks the instructor is misinstructing ("hey, I showed them how to ditch thier belt" as a defense when asked why a diver couldn't make it back to the boat while swimming with an overweighted belt.)
