"But I've had many leisurely long dives on non-hunting-oriented trips on boats like the Sundiver."

Exactly. So have I, and so I didn't expect to have a limited dive time yesterday. Lesson learned.
One of the reasons I avoid Catalina boats is because they always seem to hit the same sites every time. It was nothing against the boat or Captain. The Pacific Star is a nice boat and Captain Dave was friendly, got us there on time and back by 10:00. I just didn't know the rule and although I like the good visibility and healthy kelp forests, Catalina bores me to death. The lack of life there compared to Palos Verdes, Malibu, La Jolla and even Laguna makes each dive not much more than a leisurely swim through the kelp. I was expecting to go to places like Hen Rock and a few other not-so-secret sites which are better bug producers than the sites we hit.
