I was diving Farnsworth Bank Friday when I encountered a sea star I don't ever remember seeing before. It superficially resembled the tan or pyramid sea stars of the Gulf of California, but it wasn't of either species.

I've asked several others for help in identifying it, but so far no positive ID. It is the sea star in the lower left of the image collage referenced in this post.

Phil Garner (MaxBottomTime) says he saw several at Eagle Reef this weekend, and I found a six-armed juvenile that appeared to be the same species at Ship Rock yesterday.

Would greatly appreciate a positive ID on this one. Strange that it would suddenly be present since I've dived these waters for decades and don't ever remember seeing one before.

TIA
