Here's a brief look at some of that diversity. There are many dive sites along the California coast especially Palos Verdes, Monterey and Big Sur where a diver could spend fifteen minutes looking at a single rock and not get bored. I wonder if the amount of nutrients produced by runoff contributes to the biodiversity. So many offshore sites seem too sterile.
