Best Surfers in the World Invited to Mavericks at Half Moon Bay

Publication date: 2006-02-06

(KCBS)--Thousands of surfing fans will be converging on Half Moon Bay tomorrow armed with binoculars and blankets to watch the annual Mavericks Big Wave Surf Contest.
"Waves have been recorded at something around 70-feet," Mavericks organizer Keer Beedling told KCBS reporter Matt Bigler.

Because of the wave action, contest organizers have set the 2006 Mavericks to take place Tuesday when conditions should be optimal for the "Super Bowl of surfing."

"Our surf forecasters are projecting waves of thirty or forty-feet plus. That's the equivalent of dropping in to and surfing on a four or five-story building," Beedling said.

24 elite surfers from as far away as Australia and Brazil have been invited to this year's contest. They will all compete for the top prize of $30,000.

The event is expected to attract up to 30,000 fans.
