Alternatively, book through a ship that will have a open water certification class on board. Inevitably, they go to good but less hectic spots. Or consider an unsupervised dive off the pier at the Anacapa landing cove through Island Packers in Ventura or at Casino Point in Avalon. It is wise for new divers to dive in Socal in the Winter. Some of my finest dives were done in that season.
