Teh other shops also have training classes going out, so check with thme as well and ask if they have an OW class going - the site will usually be easy - little current and kelp, a good intro. Spectre out of Ventura also tends to pick good sites - plus it has a hot tub which is invaluable on winter days! They offer an all inclusive deal if you book directly through them - its a fantastic deal as it lets you know your total cost (excluding tip). Winter can bring some rough seas, but if they are calm, you'll have some of the better diving (though chilly).
