| Heterostichus rostratus : Giant Kelpfish guarding it's nest of eggs |
|
Posted by Chris on February 23, 2006 at 10:20:54: On Saturday, February 19, 2006 I went with Sport Chalet to Catalina aboard the Great Escape. During me first dive at Emerald Bay I encountered a Giant Kelpfish (Heterostichus rostratus) that seemed much less skittish than usual. It let me get close and take multiple shots of it without swimming away. Later that evening when I review my pictures at home I discovered why. The fish was protecting it's nest of eggs at the top of this small kelp stalk. ![]() Giant Kelpfish (Heterostichus rostratus)
