Many people find the back plate and wing a great set-up. It will last you much longer that a jacket BC. You can also use it for twins in the future.
I prefer an old-fashioned back-pack myself. However having used a backplate and wings I can say it is much better than a conventional BC. I think you will get many years of good use from it.
