Well, the name comes from a cruise ship that wrecked off Port Hueneme in 1970 -- the name being given to it not that long before that by its owner, the Western Steamship Company. In various places it's spelled Janelle, Jenelle, Jennelle, etc, the most common being Janelle. I don't recall it meaning anything in particular in French, so it's probably just a given name, and a recent one at that. I don't think any buddies would thumb the dive if you called it either Jan-elle or Zhan-elle. Haneya might sound a little weird.
