MAKENA, Hawaii (AP) _ A 15-year-old Maui girl was attacked by a shark late Monday afternoon at Big Beach near Makena. That's where a man's shark-bitten body was discovered last week.

The Kihei girl told authorities she saw a shark with a gray back when she suffered a 15-inch gash to her left calf while standing in knee-deep water.

One of two male friends, ages 15 and 17, who were with the girl at the time, grabbed her and took her to shore.

The friends told police they saw a gray shark estimated at five to seven feet long.

The girl was taken by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of the non-critical injury.

The beach was closed one mile in each direction, and is to remain closed until at least noon tomorrow.

The attack occurred about one mile from where the body of Anthony Moore of San Jose, California, was found Friday.

The 45-year-old Moore had been bitten by a shark after going snorkeling Thursday. But according to preliminary autopsy results, he was likely dead before the attack.
