Interesting thoughts. Do you think he was mentally ill to start with, or became that way over time? It did seem like he was becoming more unstable as time went on, especially in that scene where he's screaming about the park rangers. But maybe that's also part of the effects of isolation endured for so much time and being dependent on the mercy of nature.
I watched this about the same time as I saw "Castaway" again and thought about how being stuck out alone like that must completely change your view of the world. From our point of view, maybe it looks like mental disease, but perhaps it's just the natural change of how one understands and reacts to nature when you're forced to exist in it on your own. I think you get a completely different relationship with the world when your on its terms like that, and I think Timothy shows that in scenes like when he's praying for rain, etc.
